It sounds like something big and sturdy is rapidly being ground into small pieces with the dispassionate brutality of a very powerful machine.

It sounds a bit like the world is ending and the abyssal maw devouring it has appeared right there, beside my bed.

I feel like I'm about to die.

By some miracle, my still half-asleep brain snaps into reality and determines the actual source of the terrifying noise only a short time after realizing that it is 100% real and 100% right beside me. I fumble for my phone in the dark.
